Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their
reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to
come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates
can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race,
and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election –
actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who
makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
using their cash to influence election outcomes
- and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need
to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far
less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000
under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’
and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the
support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the
influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties
closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being
put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive
Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular
calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields
behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that
will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect
immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine
tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed
design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the
Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling
a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile
that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being
in politics to ‘clean things up’.

The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across
the US.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce
the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according
to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to
break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner
Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are
grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will
continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing
and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two
weeks of release.

in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker
than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the
first time since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5%
firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for
an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk
reward is unattractive. “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian nations after American manufacturers complained that companies there are flooding the market with unfairly cheap goods.
It is the second of two preliminary decisions that President Joe Biden’s Commerce Department is making this year in a trade case brought by Korea’s Hanwha Qcells, Arizona-based First
Solar Inc and several smaller producers seeking to protect billions of dollars in investments in U.S.
solar manufacturing. This is the latest chapter in a more than decade-long trade war with Chinese companies over their solar
dominance. Chinese manufacturers have responded
to U.S. solar tariffs by moving their massive operations to nations
where they will not face duties – including Southeast
Asia.
The group, the American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee,
accused big Chinese solar panel makers with factories
in Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand of causing global prices to collapse by dumping products into the market.
The Hanwha-led group has sought antidumping duty rates of between 70.35% and
271.45%, depending on the country, to offset the unfair pricing.
It also has sought tariffs to combat unfair subsidies in those nations,
and the Commerce Department imposed preliminary antisubsidy duties last
month.
Most solar panels installed in the United States are made overseas, and some 80%
of imports come from the four nations targeted in the Commerce Department probe.
Tariffs would increase prices for companies that import panels to install on rooftops or build solar power plants, but the United
States over more than a decade has shown a willingness to impose duties on the sector in a bid to
bolster the small U.S. clean energy manufacturing industry.
The Biden administration this year raised the alarm over
China’s massive investment in factory capacity for clean energy goods.
Biden’s landmark climate change law, the Inflation Reduction Act, includes incentives for
companies that produce clean energy equipment in the United States – a subsidy that has prompted a flurry of plans for new solar factories.
President-elect Donald Trump has called the Inflation Reduction Act too
expensive, but also has said he plans to slap hefty tariffs
on a range of sectors to protect American workers.

Wall Street’s main indexes were little changed in choppy trading on Tuesday, as investor focus remained
on a key inflation report due later this week that could influence the
Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate verdict.
Most megacap and growth stocks advanced, with Google-parent Alphabet jumping 3.6% after it unveiled a new-generation chip
on Monday, that the company said helped overcome
a key challenge in quantum computing. The stock pushed the communication services sub-sector
up 1.8% to an all-time high.
Some gains were offset by a 7.2% decline in Oracle after the cloud computing company missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter results.
It weighed on server makers such as Dell and Hewlett Packard that fell 4.3%
and 3.7% respectively.
Five of the 11 major S&P sectors were down with real estate stocks leading losses with a 1.2% fall.
At 11:37 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 48.32
points, or 0.11%, to 44,450.25, the S&P 500 lost 0.05 points, or 0.00%,
to 6,052.80 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 3.96 points, or 0.02%, to 19,732.73.
A November reading of the consumer price index (CPI), due on Wednesday,
is among the last major datasets ahead of the Fed’s Dec. 17-18 meeting.
Headline inflation is expected to have risen slightly last month.
“The expectation certainly has been that we’re (going to) see a rate cut (in December) and I don’t know if these numbers are going to be enough to shift it,” said Paul Nolte, senior wealth adviser and market strategist for Murphy & Sylvest.
Trader bets on the Fed delivering another 25 basis point interest
rate cut next week stand at over 87%, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool.
Bets had jumped after Friday’s employment report that
showed a surge in job growth but also marked an uptick in unemployment.
However, bets indicate the central bank is expected to pause its easing
cycle in January, as a host of Fed officials last week hinted at a slower pace
of monetary policy easing on the back of a resilient economy.
U.S. equities started their year-end journey on a broadly positive note, with the benchmark S&P 500 and
the tech-heavy Nasdaq logging gains in their first week, building upon a stellar November after
Donald Trump’s win in the presidential election on hopes of business-friendly policies improving
corporate performance.
Among other notable movers, software firm MongoDB slipped 13.2% despite raising its forecast for annual results.
Alaska Airlines jumped 14.2% as the carrier raised its fourth-quarter profit forecast, while Boeing added 5.3% after Reuters reported the planemaker restarted production of its
737 MAX jets last week.
Pinterest slipped 3.1% as Piper Sandler downgraded its rating on the image-sharing platform
to “neutral” from “overweight”, while eBay eased
3.2% after Jefferies lowered the e-commerce firm’s rating to “underperform” from “hold”.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.39-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.36-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.
The S&P 500 posted eight new 52-week highs and two new lows,
while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 57 new highs and 64 new
